Overview

This course, offered in collaboration with the Ontario Good Roads Association, covers the fundamentals of asset management with particular emphasis on buried infrastructure (water and wastewater pipelines). The week long hands-on course will provide an in-depth knowledge of the essential processes and techniques required to establish an effective asset management program for water and wastewater utilities. The course will also highlight the new developments and future trends in the asset management field.

    Basic and advanced asset management frameworks
    Asset management standards: PAS 55, ISO 55000
    Asset inventory – water and wastewater system components and attributes
    Asset valuation, PSAB 3150
    Level of service and key performance indicators (KPI)
    Pipe materials and their failure mechanisms
    Criticality analysis and risk-based prioritization of water and wastewater pipelines
    Condition assessment and grading of water and wastewater pipelines (WRc and PACP)
    Risk-based rehabilitation and replacement planning
    Life-cycle costing and development of financial sustainability plans
    New developments in water and wastewater pipelines asset management

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

    Apply essential principles of basic and advanced asset management processes
    Develop water and wastewater data and inventory models
    Comprehend engineering properties of various pipe materials and their deterioration/failure mechanisms
    Describe suitable condition assessment techniques and protocols for water and wastewater pipes
    Determine how to rehabilitate and renew deteriorated pipelines with minimal financial and social costs
    Apply techniques for optimal rehabilitation and replacement decision making based on risk management principles
    Determine alternative pricing strategies and financing mechanisms for financial sustainability of water and wastewater networks
    Run and analyze various short and long-tern asset management strategies using a new system dynamics model developed at the University of Waterloo
